Germination Temperature and Days by Crop

The temperature band each vegetable seed needs, and how many days emergence takes inside that band.

Tomato seed germinates in 5-10 days at 20-25 °C. Outside that band the window slips, which is why nursery beds are managed for warmth before anything else.

Pepper (capsicum) runs warmer and slower: 8-14 days at 25-30 °C. A bed set at the cool end of the tomato range will leave pepper seed waiting.

Lettuce sits at the cool extreme. It germinates best at 15-20 °C, largely stalls above 30 °C, and needs light to trigger germination — so the seed is left on the soil surface, not buried.

Temperature governs storage as well as germination. The rule of thumb: storage life doubles for every 5 °C drop in storage temperature, and independently for every 1% drop in seed moisture content.

Use these windows together with the rates on Seed Rate and Spacing per Hectare and the steps in How to Sow Seeds to plan sowing dates crop by crop.

  • Tomato: 20-25 °C, 5-10 days
  • Pepper: 25-30 °C, 8-14 days
  • Lettuce: 15-20 °C, stalls above 30 °C, needs light
  • Storage: life doubles per 5 °C drop and per 1% moisture drop
